Introduction

Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) is currently the largest global business management training programme with a focus on starting and improving businesses as a strategy for creating more and better employment for women and men. It supports the sustainable development goals by promoting:
  • Business development policies that support decent job creation, entrepreneurship and encourage the growth of micro, small and medium.M< enterprises
  • Productive employment and decent work for all, including the youth and persons with disabilities.

History

  • SIYB originated in the 1970s from a business management training programme called “Look After Your Firm” that was developed by the Swedish Employers’ Federation In 1977
  • Adapted by ILO to the needs of small scale entrepreneurs in developing countries and renamed to “Improve Your Business (IYB)”
  • In the early 90’s the “Start Your Business (SYB)” training package was developed in Fiji to complement the Improve Your Business training package
  • In 1998, “Generate Your Business Idea (GYB)” was developed in southern and eastern Africa
  • In 1999, the ILO grouped GYB, SYB and IYB training packages, calling it “Start and Improve Your Business” (SIYB) programme.
  • 2003, "Expand Your Business (EYB)" is developed and introduced in Sri Lanka and southern Africa for growing small enterprises

Bangladesh Involvement

In 2015, International Labor Organization (ILO) introduced SIYB in Bangladesh in collaboration with SIYB Sri Lanka. Mr. Francis D Silva, The International Adviser of ILO BSEP Project invited two master trainers Mr. Mohan Thilakasiri, CEO and Mr. Chopadithya Edirisinghe to delivered the first ToT on GYB & SYB for 15 industry experts nominated by ILO. Later on in 2016 another 15 industry experts have been nominated for the same ToT on GYB. After successful completion of both the ToT with 30 members received the certification form ILO to conduct the similar training in the country for creating more and better employment for women and men. Till now more 100+ women and men have have received the training and other to develop their own businesses.

Why and How SIYB Bangladesh Formed

In Bangladesh the main problem is the unemployment. And it is in high rate in rural areas in Bangladesh. This unemployment can be removed if we can motivate young minds to become entrepreneur for creating employment rather seeking employment. Seeing this opportunity, ILO trained 30 trainers have set together and decided to form an independent non profit organization from where the rural and marginalized women and men will get Entrepreneurship development training and other business development services. On 17 September, 2017, RJC registered SIYB Foundation of Bangladesh (SIYB Bangladesh) as Government approved Non Profit Foundation.

SIYB Foundation of Bangladesh has been continuing its journey towards excellence. With the support of ILO office in Dhaka. 28 national trainers are trained by the Master Trainers of Sri Lanka and Nepal on Generate Your Business (GYB), Start Your Business (SYB), Improve Your Business (IYB) and Level 1 (for illiterate segments) modules of SIYB while so far more than 1100 participants are given SIYB training. Among other things, contextualization of GYB and SYB module along with SIYB Business Game have been done in Bangla.

The way forward strategy of SIYB Bangladesh has also been developed through workshops and involvement with all members. Worked with Plan International Bangladesh, Oxfam Bangladesh, iDE Bangladesh and PRISM project of European Union for entrepreneurship development training programs in different parts of Bangladesh. Together with iDE Bangladesh, representatives of SIYB Foundation of Bangladesh made an exposure visit to SIYB Association of Sri Lanka and developed new strategic dimensions in stakeholder management. SIYB Foundation of Bangladesh has been continuing its journey toward excellence through promotion of SIYB Program through strategic partnership and strengthen the capacity of its members and the organization as a whole.
